‘For last year’s words belong to last year’s language
And next year’s words await another voice’Little Gidding Part II
T. S. Eliot
(Eliot, 1963, p. 204)
1In the first section of this book, we have presented the case for encouraging the use of body and voice in language teaching. The apparent simplicity of some of the observations that have been laid out should not, however, belie the challenge that faces teachers who have not had any training in body and voice work. The enthusiasm displayed by participants in THEMPPO workshops has often been tempered by personal doubts concerning their capacity to implement practical work in the classroom.
2The section which follows has taken into account the need to give as much support as possible to those teachers who, through our workshops, have recognised the value of body and voice, and who wish to introduce this work into the language classroom. Curiosity, or sheer interest, may have brought other teachers to this book, and we hope that the user friendly lay-out of this second section will encourage them to investigate the potential of these exercises for improving oral communication.
