Introduction

Poland, as a member of the European Community [2004], has a need for information of various kinds. This information comprises in-depth analysis of not only society as a whole, but also specific regions and local communities including the coal mining communities of large Silesian towns. The Upper Silesian region is still the heart of the coal industry in Poland. This paper describes some important aspects of the process of restructuring of the coal industry in Poland since the big changes of 1989. It investigates how citizens nowadays cope with the many problems of living in a coal-mining city in Poland. Life in a local community can be examined on at least a few levels. Within diagnosis of social problems, such complex research provides a necessary method for gaining adequate knowledge.

The analysis will focus on three main areas. The first is the economic level, showing the present condition of the coal industry in Poland and especially in the province of Upper Silesia. ...
