Introduction

The objective of this paper is to present a reflection on the paths and detours of a case in which counties with small cities and towns typically focused on rural activities and small enterprises, have transformed their reality by their conversion into mining territory. Here we analyze how the logic of deploying a mining project affects local life and can demonstrate weaknesses in building long-term prospects for sustainable territorial development.

The state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is known for its mineral wealth and the potential for exploitation concentrates. This implies a government effort to stimulate economic activity focused on mining and the recent expansion of mining boundaries, as evidenced by the Economic Development Company of Minas Gerais1.
