Archaeological field surveys and excavations at Metaponto have recovered dozens of terracottas of the 4th and 3rd c. BC in domestic contexts, and hundreds of related terracottas at both the rural and urban sanctuaries of the city. The paper first examines the complexes of imagery presented by assemblages of terracottas from more than a dozen farmsteads in the chora of Metaponto. Then, moving beyond the individual farmstead, emphasis is given to placing the imagery of only those terracottas that occur most frequently in rural domestic settings within the broader context of the presence of that same imagery among terracottas dedicated as votive offerings at the numerous rural and urban sanctuaries of the city-state. Due to the extensive nature of the Metaponto survey, one can now view the practice of religion in an expanding panorama that begins at the level of the private household, moves on to the more public neighborhood shrine, and arrives finally at the formal, state-sanctioned sanctuary in the ceremonial center of the polis.

Estratto del testo
In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the presence of terracottas within domestic contexts throughout the ancient Mediterranean world.1 What role a figured terracotta may once have played within a household is a question that often lies open to interpretation. Did a given terracotta serve, for instance, a purely decorative purpose? Or did its imagery unavoidably evoke a set of social and sacred beliefs, not only of the individual household, but also of the larger community? Does the presence of such an object signal, moreover, formal, repeated actions of rite within a domestic setting? And if so, how do these private practices at the level of the household relate to ritual actions and their implied system of beliefs that were performed in the more public context of a sanctuary?
Recent research on terracottas of the 4th and 3rd centuries BC from the Greek city-state of Metaponto on the instep of the boot of southern Italy provides an opportunity to explore such ques...
