Between the years 2002-2004 excavation in the sanctuary of Apollo at Claros brought to light a Geometric round altar, filled in the 7th century BC for the construction of a rectangular altar. The most spectacular find related to the round altar was a group of bull/bovine terracottas of the 8th and 7th centuries BC. The paper will focus on the fabrication technique of the figurines (hand modelled, massive or hollow; wheelmade and hollow; painted with simple bands or with geometric designs) and their typology. Their relation with the cult of Apollo is examined too.

1. The archaeological context
Excavations carried out at Claros since 2001 under the directorship of Prof. Dr. Nuran Şahin focused on the early altars of Apollo. In work carried out between 2002 and 2004 in sector K 15 B immediately east of the Hellenistic temple of Apollo, the rectangular altar from the 6th century BC that had been identified in previous years was again uncovered for a new study. The finds also showed that the altar was used until sometime within the 5th century BC. The new finds relevant to Apollo’s archaic and early classical altar will be considered in a separate study.1 Work carried out west of the rectangular altar and within the altar’s fill revealed new evidence relevant both to an earlier round altar already identified in previous work and to cult activities performed in this area before this round altar existed. The round altar was destroyed by the rectangular archaic one. The former was surrounded and the space around it was filled with the stone blocks of...
