Les textes de ce volume présentent une réflexion ouverte, à l’origine, par la rencontre entre Henry Bauchau, écrivain et thérapeute, et Lionel, patient et artiste. Henry Bauchau, qui fut engagé comme thérapeute à l’hôpital de jour pour enfants de la Grange Batelière en 1976, y fit la connaissance de Lionel, un adolescent psychiquement perturbé qu’il prit rapidement en charge seize heures par semaine. Cette rencontre décisive se déplaça, au cours des années, du champ thérapeutique à l’espace artistique. Encouragé par Henry Bauchau, Lionel a commencé à dessiner, peindre et sculpter, tandis que l’écrivain mûrissait lentement un roman, dont la forme finale sera L’Enfant bleu. Leurs œuvres respectives ne cessèrent ensuite de se croiser, souterrainement ou bien ouvertement comme dans la parution du livre commun En noir et blanc1, prolongeant les échanges bien après l’interruption du travail thérapeutique effectué dans le cadre de l’hôpital.
