84Ancien étudiant de Georgetown et Fordham en littérature et philosophie, Leo O’Donovan a obtenu une bourse Fulbright pour l’université de Lyon (1957), puis est rentré comme novice à Woodstock. Ordonné en 1966, il passe un doctorat en théologie sous la direction de Karl Rahner à Münster (1971). Il enseigne pendant les années 1970 comme assistant puis professeur de théologie à la Divinity School de l’Université de Chicago, puis à la Weston Jesuit School of Theology du Massachusetts. Au début des années 1980, O’Donovan a été chargé de la supervision éducative de la province du Maryland. Il est devenu président de Georgetown (1989-2001), succédant à Timothy S. Healy (1923-1992) et continuant à renforcer les pôles d’excellence de l’université, les écoles de droit, de médecine et des affaires internationales, tout en réorganisant les autres départements à l’intérieur de leur structure, ou à l’intérieur d’autres structures comme le Georgetown College, ou la Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, et en créant de nouveaux départements comme le Georgetown Public Policy Institute (1990), actuel McCourt School of Public Policy (depuis 2013) et le Center for Muslim and Christian Understanding (1993). L’Université engrange des financements et se désendette en vendant les parts majoritaires de son hôpital à la structure Medstar Health (2000).
