Currently one of the richest fields in applied linguistic research centers on the question of bilingual identity. The definition of bilingualism is itself the subject of much discussion, but for the purposes of this article I will adopt Valdez’s and Figueroa’s broad definition as simply “knowing two languages1”. Once past definitions, investigation into bilingualism quickly branches off into numerous subfields. Sociolinguistic research may focus on minority speakers and the challenges of integration, education, and employment they face. Investigation into code switching, that is changing from one language to another in a specific context, also yields interesting results.
