Ireland is known to have one of the oldest language policies in Europe which is one that fosters bilingualism. This policy mainly relies on the education sector through the acquisition of a second language, Irish, which is one of the two official national languages, the other being English. The Irish language is a compulsory subject in both primary and secondary schools and is also the language of instruction in 4.4 % of schools located outside the Irish-speaking heartlands, known as the Gaeltacht, which are located mainly in the west of Ireland. However, in the past 40 years immersion education has been growing rapidly in Ireland.

Although there were already Irish-medium schools as early as the 1930s this new generation of schools differs from the schools established by the state between the 1930s and the 1960s as they result from a parent-led initiative.
