Textauszug

After having disassembled The Mad Fiddler in order to compare it with the Portuguese heteronyms, we will now try to put all those parts together again, and trace then The Mad Fiddler’s own individuality.

Before focusing on the text itself, however, we will investigate the English part of the Pessoan estate, in order to evaluate, approximately, the extent of the English writings by Pessoa as opposed to his Portuguese writings. This first catalogue will allow us roughly to classify Pessoa’s English production. As Alexander Search occupies an important place within Pessoa’s English writings, we will try to define his personality and to evaluate his cultural background through his (Search’s) readings.

The rest of this chapter will be devoted to a description and evaluation of The Mad Fiddler as regards its name, date of composition, Pessoa’s purpose, content, etc. From the unpublished documents found in the estate, we will also try to define Pessoa’s own opinion of this collection of poem...
