This multifaced heteronymic and bilingual work hides one and the same quest: the desperate attempt to find inner harmony. Pessoa’s work deals with the tragedy of human existence, above all the artist’s life, a continual striving towards absolute Perfection. Pessoa’s search for his true self reveals a very religious being. His entire work is based on a basic metaphysical concept: consciousness of the grave mystery of Life, and the attempt to show Life taken as a whole. His work is a constant questioning of the enigma of existence. In consequence, this quest increases Pessoa’s pain and anguish, since his human limitations reasonably prevent him from totally penetrating the secret of Life:
