It is with pleasure and with grief that I write to introduce this collection of articles by Bertrand Goffaux. I am honoured to have been asked by his colleagues and friends to contribute to a volume, designed as a homage to him. The opportunity that this has given to read and re-read the papers that he wrote has brought back to mind with great delight his qualities of erudition, acute perception and clarity of exposition, that led me to write, in a letter of recommendation many years ago, that I believed he was ‘set to become one of the most significant social and economic historians of the rising generation.’ This, of course, is also the source of my grief. His death at so early an age in April 2013 has not only robbed his wife, Agnès, and their children of a husband and father but also his colleagues and the academic world of a brilliant exponent of the art and science of Roman history.
