Part 6 Other Problems

How to translate dont

Texte intégral

Your dictionary will tell you that dont is a relative pronoun, showing possession or quality. The suggested translations are ‘whose’, ‘of which’, ‘among which/whom’, ‘for which/whom’, ‘from which/whom’ or ‘about which/whom’.

In practice, and according to the context, ‘including’ may be a useful translation for dont. Sometimes it may not be necessary to translate it at all.

1) Examples using ‘whose’

The word ‘whose’ is used to link a person and an object with the idea of possession. You will see there is an easier way to do this.

Mme Bachmann, dont la candidature ne cesse de prendre de l’ampleur, a déclaré devant ses partisans que sa victoire était « un message » signifiant que « Barack Obama sera le président d’un mandat ».
Le Monde, 14 août, 2011

Mrs Bachmann, whose candidature is growing in credibility…

or: Mrs Bachmann’s candidature is growing in credibility. Speaking to her supporters, she declared that her victory was ‘a message’…

Comme l’indique le faible nombre d’arrestations, les forces de l’ordre ont été prises de court par les tactiques de harcèlement des émeutiers. Seulement 10 % des 30 000 policiers de la Met sont formés au maintien de l’ordre. Etrangement, la Grande-Bretagne ne dispose d’aucun canon à eau, dont l’utilisation est limitée à l’Irlande du Nord.
Le Monde, 10 août 2011

Strangely, Great Britain has no water-cannon, whose use is limited to Northern Ireland.

This example is grammatically correct but does not sound idiomatic. A better translation would be:

Strangely enough, Great Britain has no water-cannon, which are only used in Northern Ireland.

Here, the abstract noun utilisation has been replaced by the verb ‘to use’.

Devenu sénateur de la région de Nimba (Nord), Prince Johnson s’était rendu tristement célèbre en 1990 lorsqu’il s’était laissé filmer en train de boire une bière en regardant ses hommes torturer l’ex-président Samuel Doe, dont la mort avait entraîné le déclenchement de la première guerre civile au Liberia.
Adapté de Le Monde, 14 octobre 2011

… when he let himself be filmed drinking a beer while watching his men torture the former president, Samuel Doe, whose death led to the outbreak of the first civil war in Liberia.

Here, the word ‘whose’ avoids having to repeat the name of Samuel Doe, like this: … watching his men torture the former president, Samuel Doe. Doe’s death led to the outbreak of the first civil war in Liberia.

2) Examples using ‘including’

If dont has the same meaning as y compris, then you can use ‘including’.

Dimanche dernier, The Artist avait obtenu sept Baftas, les prix les plus importants du cinéma britannique, dont celui du meilleur film, du meilleur acteur pour Jean Dujardin et du meilleur réalisateur pour Hazanavicius.
Le Monde, 20 février 2012

Last Sunday, The Artist won seven Baftas, the most prestigious prize in British cinema, including Best Film, Best Actor for Jean Dujardin and Best Director for Hazanavicius. In this example it is not necessary to include celui du in your translation; it is more idiomatic without ‘that of’. In this context, ‘won’ is a logical translation for avait obtenu. I have used the past simple tense because there is a precise time: dimanche dernier.

Une association a recensé près de 3000 victimes de « crimes d’honneur » dans le pays en 2010. Les plaintes déposées à la police ont doublé en un an dans certaines zones, dont Londres.
Le Figaro, 3 décembre 2011

An association has found nearly 3,000 victims of ‘honour crimes’ in the country in 2010. Complaints lodged with the police have doubled in a year in some areas, including/such as London.

3) Other examples:

Dont is a relative pronoun, used to link two parts of a sentence. You may find it easier to separate these two parts, or to use a different linking word according to the context.

« La crise a été provoquée par les forces politiques dans l’intention d’arriver au pouvoir », a dit M. Saleh, dont des manifestations populaires réclament depuis fin janvier le départ du pouvoir.
Le Monde, 16 août 2011

‘The crisis has been caused by political forces who want to take power’, said Mr Saleh. Popular demonstrations have been calling for him to leave power since the end of January.

In this example, the abstract noun départ has been translated by a verb, ‘to leave’.

Les participants devaient aussi élire 25 représentants permanents, dont la définition du rôle a donné lieu à des controverses, certains opposants estimant que la conférence, dominée par des courants islamistes, n’était pas assez représentative pour parler au nom de l’ensemble de la révolution syrienne.
Le Figaro, 16 septembre 2011

Participants also had to elect 25 permanent representatives. The definition of their role has given rise to controversy because some opponents believe that the conference, dominated by Islamist opinions, was not representative enough to speak for the whole of the Syrian revolution.

In the next two examples, dont can be translated by ‘where’. If dont represents a link to a place, in these cases the polling stations or the museum, then you can use ‘where’ as a relative word.

Le taux de participation dans les bureaux de vote dont les bulletins ont été comptés est de 70.2 %, et confirme la forte mobilisation constatée le jour du vote, le 11 octobre.
Le Monde, 14 octobre 2011

The participation rate in (the) polling stations where votes have been counted is 70.2 % and confirms the high voter turn-out seen on election day, 11th October.

Interpol a diffusé dans le monde entier les photos des cinq toiles de maître dérobées cette semaine au Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. Cinq tableaux ont été volés dans la nuit de mercredi dans le musée, dont le système d’alarme ne fonctionnait pas.
Le Monde, 22 mai 2010

… Five paintings were stolen on Wednesday night in the museum, where the alarm system was not working.
