Water Culture at the Sanctuary of Amphiaraos at Oropos: A Quantitative Reexamination of Three Inscriptions

Anna Androvitsanea

Zusammenfassung

Three 4th-century inscriptions found in situ at the Sanctuary of Amphiaraos at Oropos constitute an instance of ancient “open government data,” providing access to public information on planned and implemented building projects. The inscriptions document the construction of a drainage system and a bath complex in detail, as well as the rehabilitation of a fountain and two bath complexes. They discuss the scope of work, budgetary and time constraints, and responsible individual, providing valuable information about the topography of the site and the history of its development. The complexity and adaptation of the hydraulic system, part of the expansion and transformation of the sanctuary, offer new insights into the evolution of ancient hydraulic science and on the different techniques used to store and distribute water and to influence the micro-climate of a site and its experience by visitors.

In this article I shall offer an overview of the remains of the Amphiaraion and the installations pertaining to the management and use of water at the site. To better understand the phasing and function of buildings with hydraulic features and numerous water channels, I shall closely read and analyze three 4th-century inscriptions that detail the construction and repair of specific installations.2 Calculations based on data gleaned from the inscriptions point to a different arrangement of the sanctuary than the one suggested in previous publications. My findings demon...
