Nihilo. Monsieur Hamelin, vous avez fait de moi le protagoniste principal de quatre nouvelles du recueil intitulé Sauvages, et d’un roman. Dans chaque cas, le personnage était un écrivain, aussi bien dire une sorte d’alter ego. Je vous avoue que, avant cette rencontre, je n’étais pas sans nourrir quelques appréhensions…

Hamelin. Quand j’ai eu l’idée de cet entretien, j’avais mes doutes, moi aussi.

Nihilo. Dans vos courriels, vous avez insisté sur une formule qui laisserait l’élément biographique et anecdotique de côté, et je suis d’accord. On pourrait jouer au petit jeu des comparaisons, mais quel intérêt ? Peut-être qu’on peut commencer par régler un détail tout de suite : est-ce qu’on se tutoie ?

Hamelin. Ouais, OK.

Nihilo. Je crois que je suis plus jeune que toi, d’une bonne douzaine d’années, non ?

Hamelin. C’était moins que ça quand je t’ai créé. On avait peut-être un an de différence, à l’époque. Mais moi, le temps me rattrape…

Nihilo. Donc, on ne va pas sortir le ruban à mesurer et...
