Texte intégral

1We gratefully acknowledge the support given by the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg and the Kultusministerium des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt to the conference “Reading in Enlightenment Europe / Lire dans l’Europe des Lumières”, held at the Stiftung Leucorea in Wittenberg from 19th to 21st June 2003, and by our partners in that conference, the Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III, the founders of CIRBEL (Centre interdisciplinaire de recherches sur les Îles Britanniques et l’Europe des Lumières), and the University of Northumbria, Newcastle. This was the fourth CIRBEL international conference and the second to take place outside Montpellier. I am grateful, too, to the Stiftung Leucorea Wittenberg for hosting the event and to my colleagues in the Rectorate and the Institut für Romanistik in Halle who participated in the running of it. My gratitude also goes to Élisabeth Détis and Allan Ingram, the French and English co-organisers of the conference, and especially to Andréa Gagnoud (Montpellier) for her work in translating texts and materials and co-editing the volumes with the papers held at this occasion.
