The Words and Sounds of Patti Smith: Bibliography, etc

p. 151-159

Texte intégral

1Providing a complete list of all the sounds, images, and words ever recorded, produced, or written by Patti Smith proves a daunting, and ultimately impossible task, on several accounts. If her own written production is well documented, though for some of it hard to find, the articles written on her poetry, prose, and particularly on her music, are so numerous, have appeared in so many diverse publications, in so many languages, and encompass so many different types of articles, from substantial essays to short chronicles, from reviews to gossips, that the effort would not only be taxing (a complete inventory does not exist at this point), but also meaningless since much of this production is of limited interest. We have consequently chosen to provide an exhaustive bibliography only of Ms. Smith’s production, and of the book-long works devoted to her art. However, the list of articles and essays has intentionally been kept to a small number of significant pieces.

2Likewise, the list given below of her musical recordings is exhaustive only as regards LPs and EPs, whether they were released in vinyl or as Compact Discs. We have chosen not to try and give a list of the singles released by Patti Smith. Many were available in some countries only, since they were released by local subsidiaries of her recording companies. Most do not offer original recordings, but only excerpts from the music already available on the albums. The more obscure pieces (alternative tracks, B-sides, live recordings) have by now been made available on official compilations or as bonuses on re-released discs. Bootlegs could hardly find room in an academic work. We have preferred to refer the reader to on-line lists drawn by reliable fans and collectors. In the same spirit, we have chosen not to provide the serial numbers of her musical production. These numbers change according to the country of release and listing them would have been of limited interest (even if the list was internationally complete), except for the collector, in furthering our appreciation of Ms. Smith’s artistry.

3Our own bibliographical attempts owe a lot to previous efforts, particularly those of John D. deGozzaldi and Fiona Webster. The lists below follow either the alphabetical or a chronological order.
