Urban archaeological excavations, carried out in 2010 in Troyes (Aube) over a 2000 m2 plot, lead to the discovery, in a wet stratigraphic environment, of a set of 12th century structures, i.e some large pits provided for the disposal of organic waste and three ditches fed by a small stream. The presence, in these structures, of tan (oakbark) and leather scraps reveal that some tanners and shoemakers were operating in the neighbourhood. In one of the ditches were also found bone remains of several equids carcasses, at lead 38 individuals being represented in the faunal assemblage. It appears that the bodies of these animais were submitted to an exploitation essentially aimed at the recovery of raw materials, suggeding therefore proximity, at that time, of leather manufadurers and renderers, and a possible interaction between them. This specific treatment of equids carcasses leads also to a refledion about the particular datus of horsemeat and about its consumption by men during the Middle Ages.
