Horse burials in the Carpathian basin. Comparative study of six cemeteries from the middle of the 7th to the middle of the 9th centuries
Zusammenfassung
The so-called “horse and horsemen burials” of Steppic cultures, including those of the Avar period in early medieval Central Europe, are well known by archaeological research. The question of equine presence in funerary context will not be broached here through the “nomadic tradition” point of view, often set up as a model. The matter is to consider every archaeological data as an evidence of a funerary gesture, of a step in the sequence of funeral operations. The purpose is to give back the initial process, sketching the successive actions in their temporal and spatial characteristics in order to understand the place given to horses. The data of six cemeteries have been compared by means of simple statistical analysis. Results and observations allow a first outline of horse’s funerary handling, of his role in death’s experience and, by extension, of the importance and sense given by the settled Avar society.

Textauszug
