1. Introduction and objectives
1In the frame of the 2016 excavation permit at Sissi, a preliminary geomorphological survey of the Selinari catchment was undertaken in July 2016 with as aim a better understanding of the Selinari River’s Late Pleistocene and Holocene depositional history in relation to human activity, climatic changes, and relative sea-level fluctuations. Through this research, we hoped to clarify the relationship between the Minoan community at Sissi and its immediate environment and answer specific questions regarding landscape changes in the Selinari lowlands since the mid-Holocene, such as: was the Kephali hill flanked by shallow marine embayments during the Bronze Age? What was the hydrological regime of the Selinari catchment during the occupation of the Kephali? By closely coordinating geomorphological investigations with surface archaeological surveys (foreseen to start in 2017), high-resolution records of land use and soil erosion in the Selinari catchm
