1. Introduction

During the 2015 and 2016 campaigns on top of the Kephali hill, excavation resumed in the large open area east of Building CD (Zone 4). As indicated on figures 4.1a-b, the area was subdivided in five different trenches (and their respective sub-trenches). Furthermore, in 2016, a new Zone (13) was opened further south, on the other side of the Neopalatial road (fig. 4.1b). Preliminary results for this new excavation area are presented at the end of this chapter.

Although the entire area was probably open during the Postpalatial period (probably a large court in front of the main entrance to Building CD through room 3.1; Sissi II: 86-87), early tests in the area (seasons 2007 and 2008) indicated that it was densely occupied in earlier periods (Sissi I: 132).
