By the end of the 2011 excavations, five compartments had been identified in Zone 9, the west part of the cemetery located at the foot of the Kephali hill (fig. 3.1). Two of these compartments, 9.1 and 9.2, had been fully excavated (Sissi II: 65-67; III: 41-51), whereas the large pottery deposit inside compartment 9.3 had been sampled. The aim of the 2016 campaign was twofold: to excavate compartments 9.4 and 9.5, and to extend the trench towards the south, east and west to define the limits of the funerary use of this sector of the terrace. The protocol guiding the excavation of the tombs has been described elsewhere (Sissi I: 57-58; Crevecoeur et al. 2015).
1. South Extension
The South Extension measures ca. 12 by 5 m (fig. 3.1). Excavation first removed a layer of topsoil, a few cm thick, comprising loose soil with many small pebbles (fig. 3.2).
