Exploring Aspects of Communication in the Temple Tomb at Knossos*

The Temple Tomb at Knossos is one of the most intriguing and enigmatic buildings of the Minoan world. Possessing characteristics suggestive of both funerary and religious functions, its precise role, nevertheless, remains obscure. With previous interpretations concentrating upon particular architectural features such as its pillared rooms and “sepulchral chamber”, attention has tended to focus upon functional attributions at the expense of social considerations of knowledge, inhabitation and communication. In this paper, I explore how such concepts provide for a reconsideration of its social role. By examining communication and social transformation across metaphysical and physical boundaries, I argue that these were fundamental design considerations in a building that played host to a variety of extended funerary rites.
