Scholars have often suggested that Minoan settlements were informally organized. This paper, however, employs Smith’s method for examining degrees of urban-planning, which includes an assessment of a coordination of buildings and spaces and standardization within a number of contemporary settlements, to show that some parts of Minoan settlements were highly planned.
Moreover, it appears as though planned elements of Minoan settlements were often instituted with the specific goals of displaying the wealth and power of central authorities as well as building and promoting community identity.
