The Trap of Glory by Hakob Chahamirian, published in Armenian in Madras in 1773 is quite a disconcerting work, often quoted, never thoroughly analyzed. Editor's note

Annexes
The Trap of Glory by Hakob Chahamirian, published in Armenian in Madras in 1773 is quite a disconcerting work, often quoted, never thoroughly analyzed. As the alleged first republican constitution in the world, it has generated a renewed interest since the independence of the Republic of Armenia in 199. However, it remains relatively unknown, due to the few copies and translations available, and mostly to the lack of systematic study. A critical translation in a major Western language was indubitably needed to allow access of this text to a large public and make it understandable. The Trap constitutes a part of a larger corpus of texts edited at the same period by the so-called “Madras Group”. The book enlightens several aspects of 18th Century Armenian history, particularly the intellectual and emancipation struggle of a small nation despite an unfavorable geopolitical environment. This profuse text provides factual knowledge of political, economical, social and intellectual history of the Armenians and is a testimony of the interest of diasporic communities for new ideas and techniques, that they were committed to propagate among their homeland. The text gives also some insights of the intellectual and political strategy that Armenian elites implemented to achieve self-determination. Thus, the Trap proposes a future State model under the rule of law at a time when its authors were planning various political and diplomatic steps to realise this goal in the changing context of the Caucasus.
