1With the minimal editing required for publication as a book, my aim has been to present Françoise Panoff’s thesis in its original form, with the references, tables, figures, photographs and plant lists the author included, together with a small number of editor’s footnotes to clarify points in the text. Due to the poor quality of scanned copies, it seemed preferable to manually rewrite the entire text based on the bound manuscript submitted to the Australian National University for the Ph.D. degree in 1971. For readers’ convenience, relevant tables and figures have been integrated in the text rather than consigned at the end of chapters, and the sections and sub-sections of chapters have been re-formatted so that the argument can be followed more easily. Tables were reproduced in Excel format, which has made it possible to check totals and align them with figures mentioned in the text. To keep the original presentation of the data, the maps and some of the figures were refreshed for clearer reading rather than redrawn. The author’s artistic botanical drawings and her photographs18 grace this book, just as they enlivened her thesis.

2Robin Hide’s expert guidance regarding the treatment of botanical names, in conformity with that of the author, has been invaluable. Editing has been limited to correcting spelling and adjusting the taxonomy in line with recent revisions. For the treatment of the names of cultivars, I have opted for italicisation rather than inverted commas. The table of plants cited in the text, in Appendix III, includes both Latin names with their recognised authorities and the Maenge vernacular names as in the original manuscript. To facilitate readers’ searches, I have added a column of Families. I have relied extensively on the Kew Plant List (www.theplantlist.org) for the verification of approved species name, genus and family, occasionally mentioning modified classification. Françoise Panoff did not include her collection numbers for the 500 plants she sent to the Lae Herbarium. While this is regrettable, this book and her Lae collection of specimens together provide a solid basis for further studies.

3In her thesis, F. Panoff refers to some personal communications with contemporary researchers. Her correspondence with R. Bulmer seems of interest but searches in his archives have not produced any relevant letters. It is not clear whether her field notes have been archived and whether other documents than her doctoral thesis and her publications (listed below) might be accessible. This book, however, with its tables and appendices, provides abundant ethnobotanical data that can be elaborated further.
