1Analytic
In a bibliographic context, an analytic or analytical title relates to a single component of a larger bibliographic item, for example a single article within a journal.

2Composite
A composite document is one which has several independent parts, each of which could stand alone.

3Conformance
A TEI conformant document must be valid according to the tei_all schema, and must also respect the TEI conceptual model.

4Data-centred
An approach to structuring information which prioritizes its informational content or structure above its form or appearance.

5Element
Any XML document component identified by tagging.

6Encoding description
That part of a TEI Header which describes the encoding and editorial practices applied in its production.

7Feature structures
A widely-used abstract formalism used in linguistics to represent meaning as structures of named features and feature values.

8Global attributes
Attributes which are potentially available on every TEI-defined element.

9Group
A number of independent texts which can also be regarded as constituting a single one, for example an anthology.

10Header
In the TEI context refers to all the metadata associated with a corpus or document.

11Highlighted
In the TEI context, used to describe any form of visual salience.

12Module
One of the named groupings of TEI declarations (for elements, classes, macros etc.) making up the TEI framework.

13Monographic
In bibliography, a single identifiable bibliographic item, such as a book.

14Namespace
An identifier associated with a particular group of XML element names or vocabulary.

15Profile description
That part of a TEI header concerned with non-bibliographic descriptive metadata.

16Publication statement
That part of a TEI header concerned with the publication or distribution of a resource.

17Rendition
In the TEI context refers to the way some aspect of a document was originally presented or formatted.

18Revision description
That part of a TEI header concerned with revisions and changes during production of a resource.

19Schema
A set of formally expressed rules concerning the markup of a document.

20Settlement
Any place where people live (a town, city etc.).

21Simple
A unitary text or document, which can stand alone and is complete.

22Tags
Codes or labels embedded within a string of characters to indicate the beginning or end of an element.

23Text-centred
An approach to structuring information which prioritizes its presentation in textual form over its intentional content.

24Valid
An XML document is said to be valid if it conforms to a schema.

25Validator
A piece of software which checks an XML document against a schema to determine whether or not it is valid.

26Well-formed
A document is said to be well-formed if it conforms to the syntactic rules of XML.
