The common turkey in the historic texts of western Europe (15th to 18th centuries)

This chapter examines the European conditions and consequences associated with the discovery and introduction of domestic turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo). The chronological analysis of successive written testimonies and historic archives help to document the introduction and adoption of the turkey into European culture and language. The chapter also explores early descriptions of the turkey, the difficulty of its rearing, and its successive uses from the royal aviaries to the farm flocks. This chronological analysis is based on historical narratives, books by naturalists and agronomists and French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish dictionaries from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Este capítulo examina las condiciones y consecuencias Europeas asociadas al descubrimiento e introducción del pavo doméstico (Meleagris gallopavo). El análisis cronológico de sucesivos testimonios escritos y archivos históricos ayuda a documentar la introducción y adopción del pavo en la cultura y el lenguaje europeos. El capítulo también explora las primeras descripciones del pavo, la dificultad de su cría y sus sucesivos usos, desde las pajareras reales hasta los rebaños de las granjas. Este análisis cronológico se basa en relatos históricos, libros de naturalistas y agrónomos y diccionarios Franceses, Italianos, Portugueses y Españoles de los siglos XVI al XIX.
Ce chapitre examine les conditions et les conséquences pour les Européens de la découverte du dindon Meleagris gallopavo L. (Phasianideae). Pour cerner comment ce nouvel oiseau va s’introduire et s’implanter dans les langues et les cultures européennes, on recueille les premières apparitions du dindon dans les textes, sa description et le problème posé par la dénomination à lui donner, et son insertion dans le savoir scientifique. On aborde ensuite la difficulté de son élevage, ses usages successifs, depuis les volières royales jusqu’aux troupeaux fermiers. Cette analyse chronologique se base sur les récits historiques, les livres de naturalistes et d’agronomes et les dictionnaires, espagnols, français, italiens et portugais du XVIe au XIXe siècles.

1The Americas provided Europe with many important food crops, several of which were rapidly adopted after they were discovered (e.g., maize, squash, beans, chilli peppers). Among the five animals domesticated by Indigenous peoples in the Americas, three were quickly introduced to Europe: Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata), guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and turkeys. Neither camelid species, llamas (Lama glama) nor alpacas (Vicugna pacos), flourished outside their original continent (cf. Bahuchet 2017).
2Of the two birds, the Muscovy duck quickly blended into the barnyard, to the point where it did not leave a trace in the written documents of the time. The other —the common turkey— is really the only American animal to have taken on a universal economic and alimentary importance in Europe. How did this domestic adoption from the New World to the Old occur?
3In this chapter, I will examine the conditions and consequences surrounding the introduction of the turkey Meleagris gallopavo L.
