Turkey zooarchaeological research and challenges
A review of turkeys in the Maya zooarchaeological record
p. 107-117
Résumés
In the Maya area, turkeys form an important part of the cultural tradition up to the present day. This region includes the range of the endemic wild ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) as well as the introduced domesticated common turkey (M. gallopavo). Morphological similarities between these two species makes it difficult to distinguish between hunted wild birds and captively-reared domesticates in the archaeological record. This paper presents the zooarchaeological record of turkeys in the Maya area from a diachronic perspective. The archaeofaunal turkey record indicates the presence of Meleagris from the Holocene and an early presence of M. ocellata in the Preclassic and increasing into the Postclassic. Despite the abundance of turkey remains and the scarcity of biomolecular studies, our review makes it clear that identifications at specific levels still need to be refined and that knowledge of population structures has not yet been explored in the region. The application of biomolecular methods has the potential to provide new insight into turkey management by the ancient Maya.

Extrait
1The pre-Columbian inhabitants of the Maya cultural area (figure 7.1) established important links with fauna in their surrounding environment, using wild and domestic animals for food, modifying their skeletal elements into tools and adornments, and incorporating symbolic animal associations into their cosmovision. Animal use by the ancient Maya can be reconstructed from iconography, ethnohistory, ethnography, and especially zooarchaeology. Zooarchaeological evidence indicates extensive past use of animals such as white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), peccary (Tayassuidae), iguana (Ctenosaura similis), dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and large-bodied rodents such as pacas (Cunniculus paca) at inland sites (Götz 2008; Gotz & Emery 2013). At coastal Maya sites, zooarchaeological assemblages contain a high diversity of sea turtles (Cheloniiidae) and fish (Elasmobranchii and Teleostei) (Götz 2008; Jiménez Cano 2019). Among avian taxa, large-bodied Galliformes are the most abundant
