Yves Krumenacker

1Université de Lyon Jean Moulin Lyon 3, LARHRA UMR 5190

2Religious history has been profoundly transformed in recent decades. The evolution of the CIHEC (International Commission for History and Studies of Christianity), that was founded in 1952, is a good witness to this. Religious history has been deconfessionalized, in France perhaps even more than elsewhere ; there, it has completely separated itself from theology. But if you want to emancipate yourself from a confessional history, you have to find alternative methods. This has been happening for many years, thanks to social history, microstoria or historical anthropology. This continues today. The texts that follow are the proceedings of the CIHEC conference held in Lyon from June 11 to 13, 2019, on the current renewal of religious history. It deals with the history of communist countries, transnational history, global history, the history of law and justice, the history of the book, economic history, digital history, the history of knowledge, and gender history. The aim is always to ask ourselves how the bringing together of these disciplines can bring something new.

Microhistorical Approach to Church History : Secret Life of the Sisters of St. Catherine in Soviet Lithuania (1948–1988)
Vaida Kamuntavičienė

3Vytautas Magnus University (Lituanie)

Religious History as a « New » History in Post-Communist Historiography Following the Example of the History of Religious Orders in the Middle Ages in Slovakia after 1989
Gabriel Hunčaga OP

5
Comenius University, Bratislava (Slovaquie)

Transnational history as a tool for church history – uniting the histories of small nations’ churches
Riho Altnurme

7University of Tartu (Estonie)

Claude Prudhomme

9Université Lumière Lyon 2 - LARHRA UMR 5190

10Heir to the history of external or distant missions, the history of the spread of Christianity outside Europe began in the 1970s to free itself from ecclesiastical and confessional objectives in order to acquire scientific legitimacy and academic recognition. Its empowerment requires the systematic use of the human and social sciences (linguistics, psychology, sociology and anthropology) from which it borrows concepts, models and interpretative frameworks. In this way, it contributes to introducing the field of religion into the components of a broader history of societies and cultures in which Christianity seeks to establish itself. The rich results demonstrate the influences it exerts and receives in many fields, verifying the fertility of a decompartmentalization of the religious. But the recent emergence of a related history, in line with globalization, raises a new question : what place should be given to the confessional approach in a history of the circulation of religions oriented towards interactions in terms of beliefs, rites, and practices ?

Some of the problems in writing a « Global History of Modern Christianity »
Hartmut Lehmann

11Universität Kiel (Allemagne)

Anne Bonzon

13UR MéMo, Université Paris 8
Vincennes - Saint-Denis

14The approaches to the history of law and justice are currently opening up avenues for the renewal of religious history, as we understand it, for Catholic countries in early modern times, above all in its social and cultural dimension. Here we present two studies addressing a common theme : the Church as a mediating body and a forum for settling disputes in society, whether at the parish level or at the central office of the Roman Rota.

The first article by Anne Bonzon analyzes a collection of some sixty « settlements by arbitration » (sentences arbitrales) conserved in the Departmental Archives of Oise. It studies alternative ways of settling conflicts at the parish level, whether outside of or prior to institutional justice. Using the approaches and methods of the history of justice, it reveals the various matters that were brought before the parish priests, the different ways of settling disputes, the social range of the priest’s mediation and the connection between the Church and the courts.

The second article by Isabelle Poutrin presents a progress report on research on the promotion of reconciliation and consensus among litigants in the wake of the Council of Trent. After an exploration of legal doctrine, the research focused on the sources for studying the Roman Rota, the highest papal civil court, whose jurisprudence commanded high authority in Catholic States. The article presents the sources along with the court proceedings, explains the research process and the body of evidence, which has been selected and previously presented in several publications and conferences.

Marion Deschamp

15Université de Lorraine, CRULH

16Nearly 120 years after the publication of The Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism, the shadow of Max Weber still hangs over the study of the relationship between the economy and Protestantism. This essay discusses the various directions and motivations of recent research in the field as well as theoretical and methodological problems that have arisen. It then considers if it is possible and useful, despite the ubiquity of Weber´s thesis and the many critical responses, to step outside of this framework and to undertake empirical research without being encumbered by the Weberian tradition. It examines, by way of example, how the economic practices and ethics of Martin Luther and the members of the first Lutheran clergy in Wittenberg could be subjected to a new set of research questions, thereby taking advantage of the research dynamics that have emerged in the field of both religious and economic history.

Alexis Darchis

17Université Lumière Lyon 2, LARHRA UMR 5190

18The historiography of the role of the laity within the Roman Catholic Church, in the 19th and 20th centuries, witnessed important progress, since the 1970s and in the wake of the works by C. Langlois and C. Sorrel on congregations, B. Dumons on Catholic women and D. Moulinet on Catholic committees. Nevertheless, some institutions, at the crossroads of economic and social history and canon law, like the parochial « fabriques » (parish vestry or confraternity) were far less studied, in particular for the early years of the 19th century. Indeed, the decree of June 26th, 1803 (7 Thermidor an XI), subsequent to the Concordat of 1801, restored «fabriques» which had been suppressed during the Revolution by distinguishing the « fabrique intérieure », concerned with religious revenues and expenditures from the «fabrique extérieure» which administered properties and pensions restored to ecclesiastical establishments. Thanks to the study of the proceedings and accounts of these « fabriques », we can highlight for the diocese of Bourges the difficult conditions of the exercise of Catholic worship from the years 1803 to 1809 with the sharing of the expenses of religious services between the « fabriques », municipalities and the State as well as the multiple difficulties caused by organizational duality. Those various problems led to the abolition of the initial « fabriques » and their replacement by a common organization throughout France with the December 30th, 1809 decree.

Sophie Alix Capdeville

19Université de Jyväskylä (Finlande)

20The history of Saami written culture reflects not only the social situation of Finland but also that of the Saami at the time of the Grand Duchy (1809-1917). Finland was forced to adhere to the Lutheran faith until the beginning of the 19th century when it was a Swedish province. This led to the translation of religious texts into Swedish and Finnish. The situation of the Saami languages was different. The first translations were published in 1619 in Umeå Saami, which the Saami of the eastern part of the realm did not understand.

After Finland’s transfer from Sweden to Russia in 1809, the leadership focused its effort on upholding its new autonomous status by reinforcing Finnish identity. In this context, the Finnish written language was standardized, thus enabling the growth of Finnish publications. At the same time, the first Saami translations were published, but only sporadically and in an insufficient number of copies, for which reason they were not able to meet the need for the catechism. Some clergymen tried to develop the use of Saami, both by translating books and by encouraging adults to use their ancestors’ language with their children, but this did not provide systematic and long-term support. This essay analyzes how the Saami book history reflects the Finnish colonialism of its time.

Bernard Hours

21Université de Lyon, Jean Moulin, LARHRA UMR 5190

22The prosopographical approach can renew the understanding of the history of religious orders by introducing the notion of curricula and careers into a historiography nourished by a sociological approach, by an analysis of political or economic governance, or by the history of spirituality. Many studies have accumulated more or less structured data, collected in a more or less systematic way and which remain more or less accessible to the scientific community. We are therefore confronted with data heterogeneity and dispersion. Several projects are already underway to try to remedy this situation. In France within the LARHRA (CNRS Research Center for early modern and modern History), Professor Bernard Hours directs the Monastica project. The latter project will gather data about French Carmelite nuns, nuns of several orders who were living dispersed across a large area from North Italy to the Spanish and later Austrian Netherlands from the 16th to 18th century, and finally Cistercians monks in the early modern period.

The career of a nun or a monk is broken down into compulsory stages (postulancy, taking the habit, novitiate, and vows) and into the exercise of various formal offices, or fixed period offices, according to variable designation procedures. It takes place within the local convent or monastery, but it can also take place at the provincial level or at that of the order as a whole. It can therefore lead to greater or lesser geographical mobility. Moreover, in some countries and at certain times, nuns or monks would undergo the experience of exile, which is an important phenomenon to investigate and understand.

A reflection on the data modelling of this information has already been developed within the symogih.org ontology. The challenge of integrating the project within the DfH consortium is therefore to align the existing model with the CIDOC CRM standard in order to facilitate interoperability between the various projects dealing with the same historiographic problem. The use of CIDOC-CRM offers an opportunity for convergence of the approaches within the DfH Consortium and its interest group « Prosopography use case overview ». Indeed, the extension of the CIDOC CRM for the social world, in which the LARHRA is actively involved, will make it possible to have a standard ontology thanks to which data on monastic and religious careers can be organized.

23Université Clermont Auvergne

24The discipline of musicology has long been independent of the other humanities. At the same time, history has generally remained deaf to the field of musical studies. Why are there so few encounters between these two social sciences ? This question is approached here through the example of church music. The structures in which church musicians were organized have been examined by both musicologists (the monks of Solesmes, for example) and historians (such as Alexandre Clerval) since the end of the 19th century. However, their goals were different. In the 1970s, François Lesure’s seminars at the « École Pratique des Hautes Études » focusing on psalettes in the early modern period sought to bring historians and musicologists together. Since 2001, a team of musicologists and historians under the direction of Bernard Dompnier decided to conduct a comprehensive survey, called « Musefrem », (Musiques d’Église en France à l’époque moderne) of all French church musicians employed in 1790. This survey is based on a prosopographical online database. It is still a work in progress, but some preliminary conclusions can be drawn from this collaboration.

25The purpose of this paper, in two parts, is to show the contribution of a close dialogue between the history of knowledge (histoire des savoirs) and religious history around a common objective, and so far mobilized in a largely heterogeneous way, namely the history of theology. Analysis will be in three stages.

For a new history of theology. Presentation of the historiographical issues
Jean-Pascal Gay

26Université Catholique de Louvain

27For almost 20 years now, there has been a clear return of object theology (objet-théologie) in religious history, including in France, where the tradition of Christian history inherited from the « moment of mentalities » had largely put it aside. However, this return, mainly from within religious history itself, has occurred without any real attention to the problems and methods developed within the framework of scientific studies and as a result of a « social and cultural history of sciences » (D. Pestre) that has gained ground in the French-speaking world since the 1990s. Still, it must be noted that the transition from a history of science to a history of knowledge has been made by leaving dogmatic knowledge, and more particularly theological knowledge, largely aside. This comes at the risk of distortions in the chronology of developments in scholarly practices, but also at the risk, even more damaging from a heuristic point of view, of a relativization of the religious dynamics at work in the history of knowledge. The purpose of this first sequence will therefore be to quickly review the forms taken by the return of theology as an object of study in religious history in France and in the rest of the world, to question the relative absence of dialogue with the history of knowledge, to list the relevant questions in the history of knowledge to address the theological object, to show how, by freeing ourselves from the great narrative constructed by theologians of their own history, they also allow us to fashion another religious history, which in turn is not without implications for the history of knowledge itself.

Case study (1). The theological enunciation in Asia and its problems in modern times
Jean-Pascal Gay

28Université Catholique de Louvain

29In this presentation, we propose, by rejecting a rigid opposition between context and content, to study together the place of the missionary journey in the lives of several Portuguese Jesuit theologians (or those working in the Portuguese provinces). Starting from the way in which the missionary space constitutes a context for theological work (but also for the life and career of theologians often caught between their own missionary desire and the tasks imposed on them by their competence as theologians and the needs of their order), we will try to show how this work is reconfigured (especially in its functions and its relationship to government). On this basis, we will try to see, by studying local traditions of missionary casuistry (especially in the province of Macau), how theologians managed or failed to overcome the cognitive dissonances imposed on them by the confrontation between their intellectual tools and the situations with which they were confronted. Finally, by studying the movement of theologians, but especially of texts and cases (especially Japanese), between extra-European and European space, we will show how theologians constructed a « cleaved » knowledge for which the rupture between the manuscript and the printed word intersects a geographical rupture. What is then to be seen is not simply a diversity of contexts for theological work, but a religiously more fundamental disconnect related to the inability of theology to do what it should theoretically do, namely to allow the cognitive unity of heterogeneous situations to be thought of.

Case study (2). Catholic Institutes in France and their logic of scholarly publication : the case of the journal Recherches et travaux (Angers, 1946-1948)
Martin Dutron

30Université Catholique de Louvain

31In his report reviewing the academic year 1948-1949, Soubigou, the Vice-Rector of the Facultés Catholiques de l’Ouest, regrets the early disappearance of the new periodical Recherches et travaux due to financial difficulties (Angers, 1946-1948). He indeed argues that it «would have been the ideal body to demonstrate their [the university professors] knowledge». This article provides an analysis of the failure of this periodical by replacing it in the ecosystem of academic publication of French Catholic universities. The journal’s multidisciplinary strategy was initially seen as a tool for the professors (and the theologians) from Angers to better fit into academic networks. However, at the end of the Second World War, this strategy contradicted other religious logics. On the one hand, the university is unable to bring together theology and other disciplinary knowledges within one and only scientific journal. On the other hand, the Church is not, or no longer is, in a position to absorb the entire scholarly production of Angers. By sketching these difficulties, the article seeks to shed light on the economy of production of theology as knowledge. It also shows that a geopolitics of scholarly theology - different from that ordinarily underlying narratives of history of theology - is at work here. This geopolitics is not characterized merely but a dichotomy between academic theology and Roman regulation, nor by another dichotomy between religious knowledge and knowledge about the religious.

Myriam Deniel-Ternant

32Université Paris Nanterre, CHISCO

33Studying ecclesiastical sexuality allows us to connect the history of sexuality to religious, ecclesiastical, legal, social and gender history.

In a methodological approach close to microhistory, two case studies of trials pursued by the Officialité of Paris blend these various historiographical fields.

The proceedings were directed against Claude Rivot and Charles Durand, clergymen responsible for the care of souls. A number of charges were lodged against them. Most of the offenses involved outrageous sexual encounters with women : concealed illegitimate births, witness tampering, solicitations and even attempted rape. Beyond the content of the complaints filed, close archival research has revealed occasional crossdressing, as well as the existence of relationships of concubinage in which the woman, serving as housekeeper in the church rectory, would have gained the upper hand over the clergyman.

In these cases, gender forms a « useful category of historical analysis », a framework aimed at describing the forms of domination between genders, the functions of gendered representations, and the levels of acceptability by a population facing transgressions of implicit social and behavioral norms. Can the one who is theoretically denied any sexuality, the clergyman, embody a third and asexual gender ? Or, on the contrary, does his masculinity appear stricto sensu normal, excusing the existence of a sexual practice ? If belonging to the clergy does not overshadow masculinity, how is the clothing confusion induced by sexual disguise perceived ? Finally, how might we understand the scandal caused by a disequilibrium in the master/servant relationship in the household of the presbytery if not as a sort of gender infringement since it overturns the balance of power relationships ? And wasn’t this infringement exacerbated by the fact that it was common knowledge ? Accordingly, there would be some sort of hierarchy of deviances linked to conforming to gender, or not.

Gender Sensitive Approach Meets Historical Research : A Case Study from the Context of the Reformation
Sini Mikkola

34University of Eastern Finland

Modesty and autonomy. « Double voiced » female religious in nineteenth-century Belgium
Kristien Suenens

36KADOC-KU Leuven

Revivalist women in social and spiritual interaction
Anders Jarlert

Feminist online groups versus Orthodox traditional values : a netnographic study of contradictory views on gender practices in contemporary Russia
Maria Petrova

40St. Petersburg State University, Russie
