Between 2005 and 2008, I had the honor and pleasure of serving as the editor of the international journal Modern Austrian Literature (MAL). For readers not familiar with the publication, I should provide a few pieces of contextual information. The beginnings of MAL date back to the early 1960s when the Arthur Schnitzler Society (founded in the United States) wanted to create its own research venue. In 1968, however, the publication initially dedicated exclusively to scholarship on Schnitzler was renamed Modern Austrian Literature clearly expanding its focus and, thus, also its readership. For several decades, MAL was inextricably associated with Professor Donald Daviau (University of California, Riverside) and Professor Jorun Johns (California State University, San Bernardino), who devoted their energy to the development and internationalization of the journal.
