1The cross-section of views on marine spatial planning in the tropics presented in this handbook is the result of an expert group on science research, innovation and policy that was supported by the European Union: the Paddle project (Planning in A liquiD worlD with tropicaL stakEs) (H2020-MSCA-RISE-Paddle-734271).
2A large number of institutions, partner projects and individuals were involved in making researchers available and organising seminars, workshops, summer schools and conferences: venues for the international and interdisciplinary brainstorming essential to this research topic and that resulted in this handbook.
3We are very grateful to everyone involved for their multifaceted contributions, which made it possible to set up and coordinate the Paddle project, to host visiting researchers, to organise the project events, and to finance the summer school and the final conference.
4We would also like to thank the public authorities that participated in the project seminars. Various partnerships and observation campaigns also contributed to the effective implementation of the project. The students working on their Master’s or doctoral degrees in the framework of the Paddle project also contributed greatly to its achievement through their dynamism and creativity.
