The authors would first like to thank J. Crossland, R. Kaltonga, D. Keneth and W. Bakéo, successive heads of the Fisheries Department in Port Vila between 1982 and 1992, for facilitating our close collaboration. The skilled assistance and kindness of all members of the Fisheries Department staff—especially Naomi Kalsakau, Liliane Sokomanu, Albert Carlot and Henri Kalau—was also highly appreciated.

Statistical data must be efficiently collected before processing and mapping operations can be undertaken. Data collection in the Vanuatu archipelago turned out to be an incredible challenge because the small-scale fishing operations that we focused on were based in more than 100 villages scattered over some 15 main islands. We are indebted to all of the fishermen who kindly accepted to collaborate with us for many years in our research endeavours. We are also highly grateful to F. N’Guyen, who (as of 1986) managed the logistics of this data collection network, and to O. Schaan and J. M. Guerin, French foreign service volunteers who helped in setting up and maintaining the small-scale fisheries database, and we are particularly thankful to C. Lepage for the remarkable data processing work.

We are also indebted to Mr. R. Campillo, Mr. C. Reichenfeld and Mr. M. Lardy, ORSTOM representatives in Vanuatu from 1982 to 1999. In line with the trend established by their predecessor Joël Bonnemaison, they targeted the research of the ORSTOM mission in Port Vila towards investigations on island-oriented themes. This created suitable conditions for boosting the scientific output of ORSTOM research teams and Vanuatu has thus become one of the top countries worldwide for scientific research in this field.

Moreover, we are thankful to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially Mr. J. Piguet, Mr. C. Guérin and Mr. C.-L. Le Guern, Cooperation representatives at the French Embassy in Port Vila, for co-funding the Small-scale and Subsistence Fisheries Programme in Vanuatu—the results of which are summed up in this Atlas.

We are particularly grateful to the successive directors of the IRD research centre in Noumea, Mr. F. Jarrige and Mr. C. Colin, who provided valuable support their help for the finalization of this work. The advice and support of IRD staff in Port Vila (Vanuatu), Noumea (New Caledonia), Montpellier and Bondy (France) were also appreciated, with special thanks to L. Quinty-Bourgeois and C. Valton of the Applied Cartography Laboratory.

Finally, this Atlas is dedicated to two people who have passed away but who certainly would have loved to have the opportunity to read it : Joël Bonnemaison, from his home in the green hills of Gers, and Myriam Dornoy Vurobaravu, from her office of Director of the University Centre in Port Vila.
