Acknoledgements

To begin with, I want to acknowledge my debt here to Professor Leander for her time, patience, and encouragement with this project. I also want to thank her for continuously pushing me to think affirmatively, visually, and beyond disciplinary confines. Her comments and feedback have not only moulded and honed the text, but improved it considerably.
To Professor Prügl, whose courses have not only been a source of enjoyment, but whose words have provided a constant source of encouragement. In many ways, her assertion to always ‘think things out’ provided the critical and exegetical tools I needed for pursuing this project.
To my family in Geneva, for their unwavering support and love. To Ayushi, who enabled me to dream. To Kirti, whose companionship sustains me. To Moni, whose jokes brighten dreary Genevan winters. To Apoo, who once told me it’s okay to fall. To Nidhi, for always being in my corner. To Swadha, whose scholarly and artistic work inspires my own. To Balu, who reminded me its ‘only’ a paper.
And finally, for words are never enough, to Anisha, whose presence I find in all I read and write.
