1This ePaper is composed of three parts. It starts with an introductory article by Marie-Laure Salles, Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute. Re-Enchanting Humanity – A Categorical Imperative that takes up the myth of Prometheus and ponders whether humanity is doomed to follow the path from Prometheus Triumphant to Prometheus Bound. “Can we still branch off into a radically different direction? Can we expect a Rise in Humanity, to use the words of Felwine Sarr?”, she asks, before urging us to collectively work towards the re-enchanting of our humanity –the categorical imperative of our times.
2The ePaper goes on to present the original text of A Rise in Humanity, a lecture delivered on 22 September 2021 by Felwine Sarr at Maison de la paix, which marked the opening of the academic year of the Graduate Institute. In his lecture, Mr Sarr explains how societies need to take ownership of their present and future, and proposes paths to reengage at a collective level in order to fill them with meaning. As he states, “To take care of and to repair the living is necessary for us, because through this gesture, we repair and preserve ourselves." According to Mr Sarr, a rise in humanity first requires facing the present and its challenges by acknowledging “the multiplicity of collective ways of being and of societal forms of life, the plurality of histories, as well as the possibility of several worlds, within the world”.
3Finally, the ePaper reproduces L'économie à venir, un djihâd intérieur, in which Felwine Sarr shares his thoughts on how to rethink the economy in an interview with Benjamin Gaillard-Garrido, Research Assistant in International History at the University of Lausanne, and Thomas Gmür, PhD Researcher in International Relations/Political Science at the Geneva Graduate Institute. This interview is part of the video series “Les Entretiens de la chaire Yves Oltramare Religion et politique dans le monde contemporain”, under the scientific direction and implementation of Nina Khamsy, Sophie Schrago and Thomas Gmür, in partnership with Professor Jean-François Bayart, chair holder.
