Writing this thesis was quite an eventful journey and by no means a solitary one.
I want to thank my supervisor, Professor Elisabeth Prügl, for her invaluable support and her patience, even when I ran the risk of overstaying my welcome in her office.
I also want to thank all those who accepted to be interviewed and who welcomed me in their lives and their political projects, some briefly and some for a longer period of time. Your contribution to this research was fundamental and I can only hope that I did justice to you and your tireless and bright spirit of solidarity.
Many thanks also to my friends and colleagues who listened to me ramble about my project and offered help, advice, thought-provoking questions and most importantly food and coffee.
Finally, a special thanks to those who first taught me how to ask questions and look beyond the obvious for answers. You know who you are. You set me off on this journey before I could even imagine it for myself and I can never repay you for this gift.
