1This ePaper came into being through the generous assistance and participation of a number of people to whom I would like to express my deepest gratitude. First and foremost, I am indebted to all of the women who participated in the field research for this ePaper. Their strength and kindness in the face of unimaginable but all-too-real adversity is both inspiring and humbling. I consider it an honor to have met them. I am also deeply grateful to the many people working in Sri Lanka who assisted me with my fieldwork in everything from making logistical arrangements to identifying research participants to translating interviews. I shall not list them all here, both because they are too numerous to name individually and also for their own safety. However their attitudes and the work they carry out on a day-to-day basis have given me hope that reconciliation and peace could eventually come to Sri Lanka. Finally, I would also like to thank Dr. Marc Hufty and Dr. Robert Muggah for supporting me in designing, carrying out and making sense of research that was challenging on multiple levels. Their consistent encouragement and advice has been invaluable.
