I am truly thankful to People knowledgeable with the negotiations that took place from early 2011 to June 2012, between Switzerland and Germany regarding their tax and financial cooperation – and in particular to Mr Patrick Odier, Senior Partner, Lombard Odier & Cie, Genève, Chairman of the Swiss Bankers Association (ASB) and to Mr Pierre-Alain Margelisch, CEO of the Swiss Bankers Association (ASB) – as well as sources who preferred to remain anonymous. I wish to deeply thank them for their valuable time, professional insight and personal perspective as well as for sharing their knowledge and experience of the case.

I am very grateful to Dr. Sophie Hubert Kodbaye, Executive Director or the Executive Master in International Negotiation and Policy Making with the Graduate Institute for her patient reading of my writings and for her guiding suggestions and corrections.

I would also like to address my warm thanks to Robert Weibel, Visiting Lecturer, International affairs at the Graduate Institute, for his fantastic teaching about negotiations, group exercises and feedback during the program.

I would like to give a special thought to Mathew Leitner, former Executive Director or the Executive Master in International Negotiation and Policy Making with the Graduate Institute, who was the first to challenge my topic and help tighten its scope.

I would like to thank my colleagues at the program; their knowledge and experience of international organizations, humanitarian crisis, geopolitics, and international diplomatic affairs, will remain strong inspirations.

Last but not least, I am thankful to James, Elliott, Julius-James and Winston for their invaluable support in the preparation of this paper.

The contents of this paper were written in good faith. Any mistakes or omissions are of my sole responsibility.

The hard and stiff will be broken.

The soft and supple will prevail.
