1I wish to express my sincere thanks to Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique (French Institute for Research in Africa), University of Ibadan, Ibadan, for the execution and completion of this project. The director, Dr. Yann Lebeau, and his able secretariat and library staff, facilitated the project in numerous ways, giving me the motivation to continue.

2I am also grateful for the co-operation and assistance that I received from the many persons in the field. These include the Oba Oniko of Iko, Idiroko, and the chief of Aseri-Owode - who spared their precious time to share useful information on border issues with me - and the staff of Ogun State National Population Commission, in the persons of Messrs B.I. Okuboyejo, J.A. Kumoye and B.B. George, who ably co-ordinated the field-work.

3I greatly appreciate the contribution of my brother-in-law, Professor Adebisi Afolayan - a retired professor of English Language - for the critique he offered, which led to better focus and presentation.

4Last, but not the least, is my husband, Reverend Ademoolami Afolayan, whose prayers, co-operation and encouragement helped to make the execution and final submission of the project possible.
