IFRA-Nigeria
IFRA-Nigeria is one the 27 Public Research Institutes under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs based overseas. It was set up to promote research in the social sciences and the humanities, as well as enhance collaborative work between scholars in France and West Africa. First established in 1990, the Institute is operating from the University of Ibadan (Institute of African Studies).
The research carried out by IFRA-Nigeria concerns ten countries: Nigeria, Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Liberia, Gambia, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso. IFRA-Nigeria promotes excellent, pertinent and cutting-edge research in Social Sciences and the Humanities at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. IFRA-Nigeria fosters field research and international collaborative research projects. It also runs a residency program and is currently developing its capacity to provide accommodation to scholars.
This site presents the works published by IFRA-Nigeria between 1992 and 2020, in full open access. Over these years, IFRA has focused its research on issues of democratic transition, urban violence, the restructuring of education systems in Africa, cross-border studies, religious networks, urban management and the politics of violence. However, a wide range of disciplines has also been represented, from history to musicology, economics, linguistics, archaeology and so on.
Since 2022, the publications produced by the institute can be found under the Africae imprint, which brings together the books of the French research institutes of the Africa South of the Sahara unit: IFRA-Nairobi (East Africa), IFRA-Nigeria, SFDAS (Sudan), IFAS-Research (Southern Africa).
