A harvest of assassinations

1In the last one year, there has been a rising tide of assassinations in Nigeria, leaving the citizens in fear. These brutal killings cut across every stratum of the society. Nigerian dailies have captioned these cases of assassination under various scary headlines which further instil fear into the populace.

2An exhaustive list of the cases of assassination is impossible because most of them go unreported in the dailies. However, an attempt is made here to document some of the very glaring cases. They include:

  1. Chief Alfred Ogbeyiwa Rewane, a nationalist, philanthropist and NADECO chieftain murdered in Lagos on the 6th of October, 1995.
  2. Mr Femi Oyewo, Medical Director, Pfizer Plc., Lagos was murdered on the 25th of December, 1995.
  3. Mr Boniface David Izegwire, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, with his son, Mike Oshoike Begwire, were murdered in their residence at Ojodu, Ikeja on the 29th of December 1995.
  4. Mr Nurudeen Alowonle, a Lagos businessman and socialite was murdered in Abeokuta on the 9th of January 1996.
  5. Mr Kayode Awosanya, a public affairs officer to Mobil Producing Nigeria Ltd., was assassinated in his residence at Idiyan Kelani Street, Iju Road, Oko-Oba, Lagos on the 20th of January 1996.
  6. Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the wife of Chief M.K.O Abiola was murdered in Ikeja, Lagos on the 4th of June 1996.
  7. Chief (Mrs) Bisoye Tejuoso; the Iyalode of Egbaland and mother of a prominent Egba traditional ruler was murdered in Abeokuta on the 19th of September, 1996.
  8. Alhaja Suliat Adedeji, an Ibadan based business tycoon was killed in her Iyaganku residence, Ibadan on the 14th of November 1996.
  9. Other assassinations on sundry dates between November 1996 and May 1997 include those of:
  10. George Idah, former Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State
  11. Simeon Akpata, a successful educationist
  12. Tunde Ashafa, a pilot
  13. Bishop Hayford Iloputaife, the Bishop and President of the New Generation Church.
  14. Mr and Mrs Funsho-George, both pastors
  15. Alloy Uche George, a Lagos businessman
