1I express my sincere gratitude to IFRA (Institut Français de Recherche en Afrique, University of Ibadan) for initiating and supporting this archaeological investigation. All the financial expenses of the research and publication were borne by IFRA. The initial grant was given during the tenure of Professor Bernard Caron, its first Director. To him and to IFRA in general, I say a big thank you.
2I also thank his successor, Professor Georges Hérault who continued this support. In fact, his numerous letters to Centre de Datation par le Radiocarbone, Lyons, France, helped to obtain a quick return of the results of charcoal samples sent for dating. These results made the writing of this report possible.
3My thanks also go to Bolanle Tubosun, my field supervisor from the Department of Archaeology/ Anthropology, University of Ibadan, for his painstaking role in the field, Tunde Ayoade, driver and able field assistant for almost two decades and Oladoja Olatunbosun, alias Ejo, of Igbeti, my field assistant since 1978.
4Last but not least, my gratitude goes to Mr. Tunde Daudu and Mrs. Fagbemi for typing the draft and Moses Ogunleye for drawing all the figures.
