IFRA-Nigeria

IFRA-Nigeria is one the 27 Public Research Institutes under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs based overseas. It was set up to promote research in the social sciences and the humanities, as well as enhance collaborative work between scholars in France and West Africa. First established in 1990, the Institute is operating from the Universitie of Ibadan (Institute of African Studies).

IFRA-Nigeria promotes excellent, pertinent and cutting-edge ’Made in Nigeria’ research in Social Sciences and the Humanities at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. IFRA-Nigeria fosters field research and international collaborative research projects. It also runs a residency program and is currently developing its capacity to provide accommodation to scholars.

IFRA’s mandate includes subsidizing research programs, granting research allowances to academics and scholars, publishing research results, holding workshops, seminars and symposia. The Institute also runs a library, a media database, and publishes a newsletter.

Peer review info

Our Institute follows the guidelines below regarding publications:

IFRA copublishes books submitted by local academics. In that case, the reviewing process is carried out by the IFRA team in conjunction with the submitter. IFRA then teams up with local publishers for the publication of the manuscript. Several books have been published through this process in the past years. Various of these books have been made available online through OpenEdition services as the currently available IFRA OpenEdition collections include books on the themes of “African dynamics”, “transnational Africas”, and “Africas, languages, history and arts” published since 2011.

IFRA also works with Europe-based publishing companies. This notably concerns edited books and monographs produced by scholars involved in IFRA research programmes. IFRA usually conducts a first peer-reviewing process before handing over the manuscript to the publishers, which have their own peer-reviewing committees, publishing criteria and procedures. A great deal of books has been published in the past years with Karthala (France) and African Studies Centre (Leiden, Netherlands).
