1The French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) was created following the Treaty of Cession of the French territories in India and is part of the network of research institutes of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It fulfils its mission of research, expertise and training in human and social sciences and ecology in South and South-East Asia. It is interested more particularly in the domains of Indian cultural knowledge and heritage (Sanskrit language and literature, history of religions, Tamil studies, ...), contemporary social dynamics (in the areas of health, economics and environment) and the natural ecosystems of South India (sustainable management of biodiversity).

3The Chair in Tamil Studies endowment was raised as a joint effort of the Center for South Asia Studies at University of California at Berkeley and the San Francisco Bay Area Fundraising Committee for the Chair in Tamil Studies. Starting from a base of Bay Area Tamil Americans, it is committed to the support of teaching and research in and on Tamil language and literature. The University of California at Berkeley has had a thriving Tamil program, training students in one of the richest languages and literary traditions in the world. The current chairholder is Professor George L. Hart.
