The symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments”, held in Paris in February 2009, and the present volume, are the two main components of a single project whose realization I was honored to accept and which I could not have accomplished without the support of numerous collaborators.
I would thus like to express my sincere gratitude to all the members of the Ministry of Culture and Communication who participated in the development of the symposium program, and in particular: Mr. Jean Clottes (Honorary Curator- General of Patrimony and Chairperson of the symposium), Mr. Marc Gauthier (Honorary Curator-General of Patrimony and President of the International Lascaux Cave Scientific Committee), Mr. Michel Clément (then Director of Architecture and Patrimony), Ms. Isabelle Maréchal (then Adjunct-Director of Architecture and Patrimony), Ms. Isabelle Balsamo (Curator-General of Patrimony and head of the Sub-Directorate of Archaeology, Ethnology, Inventory and Information Systems), Mr. Jean Michel Geneste (Director of the Centre National de la Préhistoire), Ms. Isabelle Pallot-Frossard (Director of the Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments Historiques).
I also thank those assisted me in the logistical organization of the symposium, Ms. Marie-Pierre Pichon and Ms. Valérie Barbedette. This symposium was also realized with the aid of the Department of Communication of the General- Direction of Patrimony, directed by Mr. François Müller, to whom I express my gratitude, as well as to his collaborators: Ms. Christine de Rouville, Mr. Manuel Candré, Ms. Jutta Nachbauer. For their efficacy and implication in the project, I also wish to thank the team of the “Grands sites archéologiques” collection of the “Research Multimedia” division of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, directed by Mr. Christophe Dessaux, Mr. Thomas Sagory, Ms. Martine Tayeb and Ms. Martine Hourcadette, who made every effort to coordinate the appearance of the lascaux.culture.fr site with that of the symposium.
But this symposium would not have seen the light of day without the fruitful partnership established with the Institut National du Patrimoine. My sincere thanks go to Ms. Geneviève Gallot, Director of the Institute, and Mr. Éric Gross, her successor, as well as to the many members of their team: Ms. Mireille Delbèque, Ms. Sophie Seyer, Ms. Irène De Freitas, Mr. Philipe Braems and Mr. François Martos. Following the symposium, the rapid appearance of its pre-proceedings on-line were made possible by the efficient work of Ms. Michèle Monnier (Sub‑Directorate of Archaeology), who also contributed the complementary element entitled “Chronique de Lascaux”, whose operation she continues to ensure.
The publication of the proceedings of this symposium constituted an additional step requiring a new phase of work. I express my sincere gratitude to the Documents d’Archéologie Française team who ensured the quality of this volume (Mr. Bernard Mandy, director of the collection, Mr. Alain Dagand who ensured the correction of the illustrations and Ms. Nelly Le Masne de Chermont who revised the French texts and realized the editorial coordination of the publication), as well as the persons who verified the translations of the abstracts: Mr. Yann-Pierre Montelle of Canterbury University (New Zealand) for the English version, Ms. Carmen de las Heras of the National Museum and Research Center of Altamira for the Spanish version, Mr. José Delgado Rodrigues of the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (Lisbon) for the Portuguese version, Mr. Takeshi Ishizaki of the Center for Conservation Science and Restoration Techniques of the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (Tokyo) for the Japanese version, and Mr Lele Wang of the Chinese Academy for Culture Heritage (Peking) for the Chinese version. A special mention for Magen O’Farrell, who through her motivation and professionalism as a translator and corrector, ensured the quality of the English version of this publication. My thanks also go to Ms. Muriel Mauriac (Curator of Lascaux Cave) and Mr. Alain Rieu (Regional Curator of Historic Monuments of Aquitaine, Bordeaux) for their assistance in the realization of the chronology of the interventions at Lascaux. I also wish to thank all those individuals, private structures and institutions who graciously provided the illustrations for this publication: Mr. François Laval, Mr. Claude Bassier and Mr. Pierre Vidal, the Centre National de la Préhistoire, in particular Mr. Norbert Aujoulat (†), the Regional Direction of Cultural Affairs of Aquitaine and, especially, the Regional Conservation of Historic Monuments and Mr. Bruno Desplat, the Cabinet Guy Perazio, the Ingenia Society SL (Santander, Spain), the Orfi Multimedia Agency (Boissy-l’Aillerie, France) and especially Mr. Philippe Dubarry, the Geosciences, Hydrosciences, Materials and Construction Laboratory and the Transfers, Flows, Fluids and Energetics Laboratory of Bordeaux I University, the Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments Historiques (Champs-sur-Marne, France), the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties of Tokyo and the Japanese Agency of Cultural Affairs, the Spanish National Research Council, the Altamira Museum, the National Geographic Institute of Spain and the Council of Tourism and Sports of the Government of Cantabria (Spain).
