Le 2 avril 2014, les grands titres des cahiers culturels de la presse germanophone rendaient hommage à la mémoire de Jacques Le Goff, privilège assez rare pour un historien, qui plus est médiéviste, qui plus est français : « Alltag und Sonntag im Mittelalter » (« Le quotidien et le dimanche au Moyen Âge ») titrait la Frankfurter Rundschau, « Mann des Fegefeuers » (« L’homme du Purgatoire ») pour Die Welt, « Eigentlich war alles ganz anders » (« En vérité, tout était radicalement différent ») écrivait la Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, « Geschichte als Wissenschaft und als Erzählung » (« L’histoire comme science et comme récit ») formulait la Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Les commentaires de ces grands quotidiens dressaient au total le portrait un peu envieux d’un homme que toutes les photographies du jour, sans exception, représentaient pipe en bouche et assis à sa table de travail du boulevard Raspail. Ils soulignaient ainsi les qualités qui, à leurs yeux, faisaient de lui un historien dign...
