À partir des Lumières, les historiens de la philosophie ont pensé l’Europe comme le territoire exclusif de la rationalité analytique et réflexive. Engendré par les mouvements sociaux, politiques et intellectuels des Lumières, l’« Européen » serait le seul homme capable de s’autodéterminer librement au moyen de sa raison, et le premier qui ait su douter de lui-même. Au xixe siècle, ethnologues, linguistes, historiens et surtout historiens de la philosophie ont identifié d’autres « cultures ». Ils les ont démarquées de l’Occident, pour en faire des terrains d’études empiriques, objets de colonisations savantes. Ce livre propose à la fois une histoire interdisciplinaire de l’histoire de la philosophie et une enquête sur la construction de l’imaginaire scientifique en Occident. Il contribue aux débats actuels relatifs au cultural turn et à la territorialisation académique du monde en aires culturelles.
The history of philosophy has contributed to the formation of the modern European imaginary. Starting with the Enlightenment, historians of philosophy conceived of Europe as the exclusive territory of analytical and reflexive rationality. Produced by the social, political and intellectual movements of the Enlightenment, the “European man” was the only human being capable of free self-determination through reason, and the first to doubt himself. In the nineteenth century, ethnologists, linguists, historians and above all historians of philosophy identified other “cultures”. They set them apart from the West, turning them into empirical fields of study and objects of scholarly colonization. This book offers both an interdisciplinary history of the history of philosophy and an investigation into the construction of the scientific imaginary in the West. It contributes to current debates on the cultural turn and the academic territorialization of the world into cultural areas.

Catherine König-Pralong est directrice d’études à l’EHESS Paris (Centre Alexandre-Koyré). Elle est spécialiste d’histoire de la philosophie et d’histoire des savoirs en Europe et aux États-Unis à l’époque contemporaine. Elle s’intéresse en outre aux pratiques historiographiques. Elle a notamment étudié les représentations du Moyen-Orient produites par l’imaginaire européen, de la pensée médiévale à l’historiographie contemporaine.
