The history of science has already accepted the idea of a plurality of epistemologies, but the idea of multiple ontologies is now coming ever more into focus. By resisting ontological questions to be reduced to epistemological questions, premodern science can be apprehended by coming to terms with the actual worlds (as opposed to mere worldviews) of the sources in various contexts. The aim of this paper is to explore questions of classification and to identify appropriate object classes as a way to approach the ontological commitments that underpin cuneiform sciences, if not cuneiform culture more generally. The evidence from lexical texts is highlighted here to underscore the independence of the way of worldmaking of the cuneiform texts from that of naturalism and the idea of the physical.

The History and Philosophy of Science, Anthropology, and Other Ontologies
Two strands of intellectual revisionism are essential to the following discussion of cuneiform classification1. The first is the rise of contextualism within the history of science, most famously but not exclusively represented by Thomas Kuhn, and the second is the development within anthropology of the ontological turn, spearheaded by Philippe Descola, Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and Bruno Latour (see below, Section 2). Closely related but prior to the ontological turn in anthropology was the philosophy of ontological relativity, associated most particularly with the mid-twentieth century philosophers Willard van Orman Quine and Nelson Goodman.
Since the 1990s the recognition of the importance of Babylonian science within the general history of science has grown. Of importance from the present perspective is the fact that the cuneiform texts bring new light to ideas concerning science as a cultural phenomenon a...
