Il ne s’agit pas ici d’une bibliographie d’ensemble relative aux sociétés d’Asie du Sud, mais de la bibliographie d’un problème, celui de la validité du concept de classe sociale dans l’analyse de ces sociétés. L’accent a été mis sur les publications récentes, car l’objectif poursuivi est d’offrir un aperçu de la question dans son état actuel. La matière est immense, et l’on n’a pas cherché à établir une liste exhaustive, mais seulement à énumérer les travaux théoriques les plus importants dans cette perspective précise, et à présenter un échantillonnage de recherches monographiques représentatives de l’approche des diverses sciences sociales concernées. Une place importante est naturellement faite aux auteurs d’inspiration marxiste, qui posent souvent le problème en cause de façon plus explicite que les autres. On s’est abstenu de reproduire la bibliographie de l’article d’Alice Thorner, dont presque tous les titres auraient pu trouver place ci-dessous : le lecteur voudra bien la considérer comme un complément de la présente esquisse.
