La langue. Entre usage quotidien et objet de connaissance

Language. Between an everyday use and an object of knowledge

Claire Beyssade

Abstract

This paper presents four examples that illustrate the porosity of the boundary between folk and scientific knowledge about language. In the first part, we discuss two examples of how the demands of the common people have at times forced the scientific community to develop new fields of research. The first example pulls from the history of dictionaries while the second example exploits research about the origins of language. In the second part of the paper, we reflect on how various institutions and groups of experts competed for control over spelling reforms in order to legitimize their role as scientists. In the third part, we investigate the relationship between scientific and theoretical knowledge on the one hand, and folk knowledge and savoir faire on the other, which leads us to discuss the place of introspection in the field of linguistics. In the fourth and last part, we consider the differences between common knowledge and received ideas.
